Being There Is Not Enough
Just finished a wall display at the Foreign Correspondents' Club, Hong Kong. Remarkable images by several of the great photographers from the Korean and the Vietnam War (Adams, Burrows, Capa, van Es, Faas, Sawada, Ut). The latest addition to this display was a Nikon F (thanks, Kees), used by FCC member Hugh van Es, when he shot the famous 'Last Helicopter' leaving Saigon at the end of the Vietnam war. Before he passed away in May 2009, I heard Hugh recount the moment he almost did not take that shot which secured him a place in the history books.
A lesson learned, if in doubt, take the shot!
